About the Lecture
Joseph Beuys, a man who always wore a hat, remains a prophet beyond his time thirty years after he died. In the Chinese art world, Beuys has been widely discussed and cited as a kind of social spirit and unique art form. The documentary Beuys directed by German director Andres Veiel was released at the Berlin International Film Festival in 2017. The director disclosed in the film a lot of video material that had never been published before, which enabled Beuys to speak for himself and elaborate his creation and art.
The documentary has not been released to the public in China. But as a component of the current exhibition of How Art Museum “Letters Du Voyant: Joseph Beuys x Nam June Paik”, Beuys will be played in the exhibition hall at the first floor of How Art Museum throughout the exhibition period.
This Saturday, HOW Lecture From Documentary Beuys to Joseph Beuys will invite two Chinese representative artists HU Jieming and ZHOU Xiaohu to share their opinions about Beuys based on their own creation and their experience in the Chinese contemporary art development and revolution.

About the Guest
Born in Shanghai in 1957, HU Jieming is one of the pioneering artists in Chinese digital media and video devices. His works have been widely displayed across the world.
HU Jieming has a preference for other subjects and often incorporate some irrelevant elements into his works. His attempts derive from the expression of internal physiology, and transform physiological charts, gesture, architectural space, identity and stave to a comprehensive experience with mixed visual effect. HU Jieming's artistic creation is based on the alternation of time, space, history and memory, and continue to put forward his views and subjects in question through various kinds of media, including photography, video and interactive digital technology, which place the audience in an unknown space time in the past and arouse the image in personal memory to form individual texts. In the works of HU Jieming, objects, materials, images, interactive applications and intelligent control establish a nondescript field full of boundless historical memory. They are interwoven with each other, covering each other and forming each other. His works convey not only the feeling about objects, but also a new narrative relationship with the space and time of the present.
Born in Changzhou, China in 1960, ZHOU Xiaohu graduated from Sichuan Fine Arts Institute. He currently lives and works in Shanghai.
ZHOU Xiaohu is a pioneer of Chinese video animation. Since 1998, he has begun to use computers to create artistic works and experiment with different forms of creation such as stop motion animation, video device and so on. His typical style is to create different image levels between images and real objects. ZHOU Xiaohu's free creation spans various kinds of art media, including animation, video, device, oil painting and comprehensive action projects. His works reflect how history is recorded in the digital age during which the specific details of history may be magnified, misread, tampered, and omitted.
