About Joseph Beuys
As one of the most important western artists in the 20th Century, German artist Joseph Beuys (1921-1986) has long-lasting influence and artistic value all over the world, even in China. We can even say that Joseph Beuys was one of the most important artists throughout the 20th Century and surpassed Marcel Duchamp as a key representative figure in the art transformation after the World War II.
As a pioneering artist, Joseph Beuys was engaged in various artistic creation. His works comprise far more than paintings and sculptures and are mainly installations and behaviors. He emphasized social and cultural intervention and had a revolutionist spirit to encourage the public to participate in the daily social activities. Beuys was of the opinion that artistic expression was a basic form of human’s expression and accordingly put forward the idea “Everybody is an artist”. He held that as long as everybody gave play to his originality, he would be able to participate in and understand the society with the true and innate quality and contribute to a better society.
